A used engine for a BMW E46

Petrols

The common sixes are M52TU and M54: 320i, 323i, 325i and 330i depending on year and market. Fours are N42, N46 and related. The M3 is the S54, and the earlier non-US M3 is the S54's predecessor story you must not guess. Read the code.

BavarianEnginesStore.org lists an E46 330i M54 and an E46 M3 S54 as different engines. The M3 unit is not a tuned 330i.

Diesels

320d cars are M47. 330d cars are M57. They are not interchangeable. Later 320d updates still are not an M57. Look at the injection pump and the turbo in the photos.

A 330d is a strong donor and a common one. Match single-turbo cars with single-turbo donors.

Fitment details

Manual and automatic flywheels differ. Compact and saloon can differ in ancillaries. Cooling on the M54 is a known weak system: a used engine still needs a sound radiator and expansion tank.

xDrive does not apply to the E46 range in the way it does later. Do not order an X3 sump for a saloon without checking.

What to check

On the M54, look for oil use and a clean filler, and ask about the cooling history. On the S54, ask about rod bearings and VANOS if the car was used hard. On the M57, look at the turbo and the swirl flaps if they are still fitted.

Send the VIN or the code from the stamp. Say 320d, 325i, 330d or M3 in plain words as well.

Warranty is up to 12 months on eligible internal failure after a correct fit.

Warranty

Eligible engines carry a warranty of up to 12 months after a correct installation by a workshop. The warranty covers eligible internal failure. It does not cover a mismatched fitment, a dry start, the wrong oil, or damage caused after the crate is opened.

Shipping

Crane crates from Hamburg is a flat 299,00 €. The engine is packed for freight and delivered to the address on the order. A forklift or an engine crane is required at delivery. The shipment is arranged to the destination the buyer provides.
